Exactly where we should be. We might not know exactly why yet, but we are confident we can make the most of our extended stay.
I know many of you are active on Facebook so this news is not new to you. We were supposed to be leaving for Haiti tomorrow afternoon (12/16/15), but for now we will be staying in Colorado for another 6-7 weeks. Here's why:
On Wednesday (12/9/15) at our 6 week appointment, our midwife noticed a murmur in Evie's heart and recommended that we get it checked out by a doctor. We had an appointment scheduled for that Friday morning with a doctor here in Pueblo.
She determined that the murmur was significant and that we should see a cardiologist to determine what it looks like. She was able to schedule an appointment for us with a pediatric cardiologist in Springs for that afternoon.
They checked her with a few different things, EKG, blood pressure, Echogram. From those they determined she had two defects in her heart.
1. Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD). Basically a small hole between the two lower chambers of her heart. It's not a huge problem. The hole is small and should close on its own as Evie gets bigger.
2. Coarctation of the Aorta. The aorta has a small narrowing in the portion of the blood vessel that leads to her lower body. It is causing high blood pressure now and could possibly cause more severe complications in her heart in the future.
But the good news is that the coarctation can be fixed surgically!
The pre-ops are scheduled for this Thursday (12/17/15) with the surgery the following morning.
The surgery is minimally evasive. It should only take about 2 hours from start to finish. After the surgery she will spend 3-5 days in the ICU, followed by a 6 week recovery. Hopefully after that time, we will be cleared to return to Haiti!
If everything goes well, this is a permanent fix and she won't be affected by this as she grows. We would just have to check in a few months after the surgery (which Kate and Evie would fly back for) and then yearly check ups to ensure everything is going well.
